What It Is: The Encoder Disk / Round Encoder (also called the Decoder or Timing Disk) - the round, finely-slotted disc mounted on the carriage or feed-roller motor shaft that the optical sensor reads to track motor position and speed. A dirty or damaged encoder disk causes erratic paper feeding, misaligned printing, or a carriage-error message.
