What It Is: The Maintenance Box (also called the Waste Ink Pad, Waste Pad Box, Ink Absorber or Maintenance Cartridge) - the ink-collection reservoir that catches waste ink flushed from the print head during cleaning cycles. Once it fills up, the printer stops and shows a maintenance/service-required message (on Epson printers, a "printer needs maintenance" or ink-pad error; on Canon printers, Support Code 5B00 "waste ink absorber full") and refuses to print until the box is replaced.
