What It Is: The Encoder Strip / Carriage Scale - the thin plastic strip with fine printed markings that the print carriage's optical sensor reads to track its exact position as it moves back and forth. A dirty, torn or misaligned encoder strip causes carriage position errors, garbled or misaligned printing, or the carriage to grind or stall mid-print.
